Olympics 2012 badminton final : Lee Chong Wei vs Lin Dan - A story of hope and despair

Olympics 2012 badminton final : Lee Chong Wei vs Lin Dan - A story of hope and despair
Lin Dan known as the king of badminton, even a person having little knowledge about badminton knows that who is Lin Dan , a legend in badminton who achieved more than everything in this game what a normal badminton player can only imagine. There is nothing he hasn’t won , no barrier he hasn’t broken.
On the other hand there is another man, another legend, a never give up warrior- Lee Chong  Wei, who is not considered as the king , who is not the big champion , who didn’t get what he deserved. Before 2012 olympics  if there is one player who has been able to beat Lin Dan , it was Lee Chong Wei.
Following table shows a brief comparison  of Lin Dan’s and Lee Chong Wei’s achievements in badminton before 2012 Olympics
                         Lin Dan
                              Lee Chong Wei
2008 Olympics gold medalist
2008 Olympics silver medalist(runner up)
4 times world champion
2 times runner up at world championships(lost to Lin)
5 times All England champion
2 times All England champion

From the above table one can see, what Lin Dan achieved that Lee Chong Wei lost.
Lee Chong Wei , a name in the badminton world which is famous more by his losses at major events to Lin Dan as compared to his achievements.
He lost at 2008 Olympics finals to Lin Dan, two times at world championships (second major event in badminton after Olympics) to Lin Dan again.
Even after staying at no.1 for 298 weeks continuously, winning a number of superseries events in badminton , Lin Dan always defeated him at major event finals and consistently came of top.
Olympics 2012 also was one of the such story of failure of this Malasian which completely broke him up after the match.
Match started with an immense crowd of Malasian and Chinese fans surrounding the badminton court and waiting to see their heroes ,supporting them for the victory. There happens the entry of the super Dan and the great Chong Wei.

China vs Malasia – A rivalry that goes beyond sport
To understand the Chong Wei-Lin rivalry, we must recognize the weight of politics and history between the two nations. In recent years, Chong Wei has come to represent, whether he likes it or not, Malaysia’s aspirations beyond just the sporting arena. He plays not just for himself, but for all of Malaysia. They see his success as theirs; and consequently, his failures too become theirs.
Lin is one of China’s many superstars, and he probably doesn’t feel the weight of his people’s aspirations as keenly as Chong Wei. Lin is the most accomplished badminton singles player of all time. There is nothing he has not won; no barrier he has not broken. In recent years, if there is one player who has been able to beat him in Superseries events, it is Chong Wei. However, in the events that really matter, such as the Olympics or the World Championships, Lin has consistently come on top.

How I watched the match
It was my first international badminton match experience as an audience. Although I had seen Lee Chong Wei earlier winning Olympics 2012 semifinal match easily against another Chinese player Chen long. So I had this dim vision in my mind about Lee Chong Wei like he is very dangerous badminton player, who cann’t be defeated for sure. So after watching the Olympics semifinal I was thinking about the final and wondering about how other Olympics finalist could look like or how dangerous he would be, will he play better than Chong wei, if yes then how could he be able to do that, when Chong Wei  was playing flawless.
These thoughts led me to watch the Olympics men singles final .
When I firstly watched Lin Dan in the final he looked like a Chinese samurai to me. And that situation in the match was giving me a feel of a revenge movie like a chinese player had come to avenge his another chinese friend who was defeated by Lee Chong Wei.
The match started with umpire announcing the names of two legends of badminton. Lin Dan was looking quite focused with an attitude that I am the winner. On the other hand lee was looking quite tense , anxious and focused as this title was meant something more for him as compared to lin Dan. He took the first game easily from Lin as I expected . He played extraordinary flawless badminton in the first game . Malaysian crowd got up from their seats , cheering for their hero .
But here comes the next phase of the game , Lin Dan fought back taking the second game . Malaysian’s spirits went down accordingly and Chinese fans found their voice.
The third and deciding game was nerve-racking. At 19-18, with Chong Wei leading, a rally ensued—probing strokes, each challenging a response from the other. A high toss from Lin Dan, and Chong Wei, at the backcourt, suddenly decided to let it fall. It was an incredible piece of poor judgement. The shuttle fell in. Chong Wei had gifted Lin Dan a point when each point had the price of blood and sweat.
A hush among the Malaysian supporters. They had seen this so many times. They prayed, but nothing could stop the inevitable. Lin Dan had won his second successive Olympic gold medal. How much more could destiny reward one man? Chong Wei sank to his knees—and one almost expected that of him too.
One fan died of a heart attack after watching the match. How will Malaysia recover from this blow?
One should have seen the eyes of the Malasians on that day. You could see every emotion in those eyes—anxiety, fear , happiness. Sometimes you could even detect two contrasting emotions at the same moment—hope and fear.
It was the day their hero  lost the most important match of his career, and this match will probably be talked about a decade later too.
Now  “Super Dan”  was a four-time World Champion and twice Olympic gold medallist.
What I felt about the match?
I didn’t understand the match or the rivalry of these two players properly at that time as it was my first match. But I was quite sad though because I didn’t want Lee to loose . I found myself connected with him somewhere . May be it was because I had watched him in one more match, or may be he was looking innocent ,decent all the time and never shown the bad attitude throughout the match, or may be I couldn’t see that disappointment on his face at the end of match. Whatever it was I felt very very sorry for him .
After the match I went on researching the whole history of these two players and I was shocked when I came to know everything about these two.
Lee being the world no. 1 for continuously for 298 weeks but never won at these major events like Olympics and world championships. How could destiny betray a man all the time and reward another all the time , these thoughts were revolving inside my head for sometime .
But after this match whatever were the situations , I found this game more and more interesting . I started watching videos like how could I improve my badminton skills and applying everything in the game whatever I learnt from this .
Everytime I watch this match I find it interesting and inspiring and everytime I hope for Lee Chong wei’s victory at the end of the match and always close the video before the end because I don’t want to see that desperation on his face again.
I know Lee lost to Lin two times consecutively Olympics  but this man gave his best in the game .He deserved the title at 2012 Olympics but sometimes life doesn’t play fair with you.
After this match I have a number of his matches and he inspired me and made me love badminton more and more . He is a never give up warrior and he will remain best badminton player for me .
I hope a great future for you Lee and I hope u will fulfill your dream of winning gold at Olympics 2016.
Wish u best of luck

                                Lee Chong Wei

SEHWAG ...Please come back

                                Sehwag Come Back

  • Who is virender sehwag?

Virender sehwag is an indian cricket player or a former cricket player. An aggressive right handed opening batsman and a part-time right arm off spin bowler, he played his first one day international in 1999 and joined the indian test team in 2001. In April 2009, Sehwag became the only Indian to be honoured as the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for his performance in 2008, subsequently becoming the first player of any nationality to retain the award for 2009.
Sehwag holds multiple records including the highest score made by an Indian in Test cricket (319 against South Africa at at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai), which was also the fastest triple century in the history of international cricket (reached 300 off only 278 balls) as well as the fastest 250 by any batsman (in 207 balls against Sri Lanka on 3 December 2009 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai). His other innings of 309 and 293 are also the second and third best by any Indian player. Sehwag also holds the distinction of being one of four batsmen in the world to have ever surpassed 300 twice in Test cricket, and the only one to score two triple centuries and take a five-wicket innings haul.In March 2009, Sehwag smashed what was till then the fastest century ever scored by an Indian in ODI cricket, from 60 balls. On 8 December 2011, he hit his maiden double century in ODI cricket, against West Indies, becoming the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the landmark. His score became the highest individual score in ODI cricket – 219 off 149 balls which was later bettered by Rohit Sharma – 264 off 173 balls on 13 November 2014. He is one of only two players in the world to score a double hundred in ODI and a triple hundred in Test Cricket, the other being Chris Gayle.

  • Present situation

Currently Virender Sehwag is kept out of the indian international cricket team by the selectors because of his continous poor performances in cricket team. He hasn't played in indian international cricket team since 2013 in both major formats-ODI and Test cricket. So now the question is how such a remarkable player once holding so many records is unable to play properly not even in a single match. A player for whome scoring a fifty or century was not a big deal , is getting out of the ground without scoring a single run again and again.  Every single fan of Sehwag is asking this question from himself that why this is happening with him. Every time he is getting out of the ground one can see a cluster of emotions on the faces of Sehwag's fans. A feeling of hope, despair, disappointment just crosses through our mind.Everyone is surprised that how this is happening with such a legend. Every cricket lover wants this legend back, everyone is waiting for the time when will send the first ball of the over to the boundary, score centuries in the cricket field.

  • My perspective

Among millions of fans of Sehwag in India I am a great fan of Sehwag.Sehwag made his cricket debut when I was a small child hardly 6-7 years old and I didn't understand cricket very much. The only thing I used to understand at that time about cricket was Sachin Tendulkar, even I wanted to be like Sachin when I was child. After Sehwag made his debut in the team he was like a bomb for team India , he continously performed well and India winning maximum matches at that time even
against Australia(most dangerous team at that time). People started saying that Indian cricket has got it's next Sachin Tendulkar. I also appreciate at that time that India was winning most of the matches and I also liked playing Sehwag. But I was not happy at that time at some point because of ignorance of Sachin in front of rise of Sehwag. Obviously Sachin was playing well but Sehwag was playing better, scoring more runs with better speed.  So in every match when these dangerous duo used to come to open the inings for India then  i used to pray to GOD for India's victory first, then for Sachin's century (priority) and then for Sehwag. It was funny but i didn't like Sehwag in front of Sachin. But obviously in the deep down i knew he was one of the greatest player in cricket history, and i started to like him as he became the permanent member of the Indian cricket team.
He remained a peak performer for Indian cricket team for next 10-12 years and became one of the most favorite player of the cricket fans. But then this difficult time came for  Sehwag. He is unable to do something which used to give him a kick,a push, which used to serve him the best in life. He is not able to get on the track even after trying again and again.
No. of people started saying that Sehwag hasn't remained a worthy player for India , he should stay out of the team or should get retired. These are the people who aren't worthy for themselves. These people beleive in giving up easily in the hard times in life. Every person faces hard time in his/her life , he/she needs supports at such time from the people he loves, who cares for him. It's easy to say that "Never Give Up" on the situation whatever the circumstances are, but everyone needs
support from their beloved ones in hard times.

  • How I find my life resembling with Sehwag's

At some point I connect this situation with my life. I am facing hard times in my life, I have got off the track. From a long time I am trying to solve this life puzzle that how can I get on the track of something which I used to love to do once in my life(studies). I just left studying for sometime and in the meantime I started doing things with which I wasn't introduced in my life.I kept doing these new things with a thought in my mind that I can study at any time if i will start it. But that time never came and I nevet tried to understand properly that what the real problem was ,only getting frustrated again and again because I had never thought that the problem could be so complicated , which I came to realize later when I started taking things seriously in life. Then I saw life was not that much complicated,It is simple, but it wasn't easy. All we have to do is to set a destination and choose a path and walk on that path. There are distractions obviously , just don't let the distractions distract you.
I know I have to get back on track and I am working on it and I know Sehwag is also working of his life problems.I know one day will come whnen this dark knight will rise.

I hope that day will come soon when we will see this great legend playing for team India and retire from cricket with honour.
Every true cricket fan is praying for your return to Indian cricket team Sehwag so please

                                        SEHWAG COME BACK
